What Is Homosexuality?
While there is significant disagreement on the precise nature of homosexuality, for practical purposes it may best be defined as the desire to have sexual relations with members of one’s own sex, as well as the actual behavior itself. Given that there is no evidence that anyone is born a homosexual, it is problematic to speak of "a homosexual" like one would speak of a "woman" or "a Japanese person." Keeping this in mind, a homosexual is best understood as anyone who willfully engages sexually with persons of the same sex.
What Causes Homosexual Desire?
Though no consensus exists among scientists on the question of cause, and while there may be biological influences, present research points most convincingly to psychological and social factors as most determinative. These factors consist of a failure to develop a healthy and mature sense of appropriate gender-identity, with the related inability to relate in positive ways to members of the same sex. There is good reason to believe that homosexual desire is, in essence, a "reparative drive," an attempt to overcome the basic gender confusion.
Can Homosexuals Change?
Although the process can be long and extremely difficult, the answer is clearly "yes." There is a growing number of former homosexuals who have experienced substantial transformation in their sexual orientation, as well as in the obsessive and compulsive nature of their sexual behavior. The very fact that such numbers exist gives the lie to claims that homosexuality is an innate and immutable characteristic rooted in hereditary factors. There is no reason to believe that acting out is something biologically inevitable. There is the matter of sexual addiction, but this is treatable through therapy and other forms of counseling.
How Many Homosexuals Are There?
In spite of a long-standing belief that homosexuals make up about 10 percent of the population, this figure has now been largely dismissed as highly inflated. The results of the most current research indicate that a generous estimate of males reporting sustained homosexuality throughout most of their adult life is 5 percent and females about half of that, with a general average of about 3 percent. If these figures are accurate, then there are a little less than 8 million homosexuals in America.
Should Homosexuality Be Discussed In Public School?
The first principle of primary and secondary education is the preeminence of parental authority. The issue of sex education in general, and of homosexuality in particular, is a matter which must ultimately be decided by the parents. Since homosexuality is a volatile and morally controversial topic, just public policy in this regard will reserve for parents the responsibility of teaching their children both what homosexuality is, and how it should be evaluated. Any curricula or programs which present homosexuality as morally equivalent to heterosexuality have no place in primary or secondary public education, and certainly not without parental permission.
What Is The Relationship Between Homosexuality And Pedophilia?
The majority of homosexuals do not engage in the sexual abuse of minors, but there are a significant number who do. While homosexuals constitute an extremely small percentage of the population, they account for a disproportionately high number of child sexual offences. Figures reveal that homosexuals as a group are 17 times more likely to have sex with minors, and do so with seven times as many victims. In addition, there is a significant movement pushing for the lowering of age-of-consent laws, so that sex with youth might be legally permissible. These facts alone reveal the threat which homosexuality poses to children and through them, to society.
